Two for Tuesday...TWD

Last week, if you visited my blog, you would know I chose not to do TWD due to an overload of sweets already in my house. Well, since there was no excess of sweets this week I decided to backtrack with the cake and also make this week's selection.

I am glad I did backtrack because this cake was easy and very tasty. There was extra toasted ground almonds in my cupboard and I mixed them with the flour to stir in. Let's just say this was an almondy treat. Good job Dorie!

This week's TWD was chosen by Melissa of Love At First Bite and her pick was Sweet Cream Biscuits. It's really hard for me to turn down baking a biscuit and this was no exception. These biscuits were nothing like ones made with sticks of butter, in that they were completely chewy and soft. Usually butter biscuits have a crisper outside with a soft, flaky inside(if made right...lol). These also had a little sweetness, due to the addition of sugar, hence the name. If you have cream in the house that you want to use up, these are definitely a go to recipe. YUMMY!

Thanks to Nancy and Melissa for choosing such wonderful and EASY recipes. So easy I was able to do both at pretty much the same time.

You can visit their pages for the recipes or just purchase Dorie's book, Baking: From My Home to Yours.

Who needs fast food? Homemade bacon, egg, and cheese...

I have been making these biscuits for years and during those years I have been very guarded with the recipe. Well I have changed that, especially since so many of you bloggers share your own recipes. My girlfriend, Gwen, makes it a point to request these biscuits as often as possible. For Thanksgiving I made Dorie Greenspan's Sweet Potato biscuits and Gwen just happened to be one of the only ones to not get at least one. She was very vocal about it on Sunday, so she asked for my regular biscuits.

I have made and posted these biscuits before http://deevassweetthoughts.blogspot.com/2009/07/supposed-lazy-summer-days.html, but this time I went for the bigger and crispier edged version.

Well here they are and guess what? The recipe is below. Don' t stop at the pictures, okay.
Keep going....
okay here you go.

Biscuits
Recipe by Devona Mcgill

3 cups of self rising flour (I use Southern Biscuit)
1 tsp. salt
1 cup unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk

400 degrees oven
Makes approx. 8-12 biscuits

In mixing bowl stir together flour and salt. Cut in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the buttermilk just until wet. Pour mixture out on lightly floured counter and knead a few times to bring all loose pieces together. Roll the dough to about 1 inch and using a floured cutter of your choosing, cut biscuit as close together as possible. Place biscuits on sheet pan, about 2 inches apart for crunchy sides or close to each other for softer sides. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Supposed lazy summer days

I have been a busy little bee lately. Last Monday I won tickets to the 311 Unity tour with Ziggy Marley and then on Wednesday I won the upgrade tickets to move from the lawn to the seats. That concert was AWESOME!!!

I have been in the kitchen cooking/baking alot, spending many hours down at the beach getting tan( not like I need it)...lol. I would have to say this is the best summer since 2003.

Next week I will be going to the John Legend and India Arie concert, hopefully I will have some pics since the pictures from the 311 concert were horrible.

Mmmmm homemade biscuits, fresh out the oven!!!
Biscuits with Berry Slick'em...it's this blackberry concoction that my grandmother made every summer we were in Alabama.

I had lots of egg whites and decided on a chocolate Angel Food cake since I usually make the regular one.

That's all for now
